The team was set up to engage the local youth who were getting in trouble at school or who were at risk of gang recruitment. The young people come from all backgrounds. Basketball is used to teach them valuable life skills as well as to create Elite players on the court. We provide training to approximately 70 young people twice a week throughout the year, including the school holidays.
Players are taught to be respectful to their parents and teachers and to be accountable for their actions. A player who isn’t trying his best at school or who isn’t being respectful will miss matches. We have national league teams as well as community sessions. Haringey Hawks is considered one of the top programmes in the country.
This is an amazing achievement as we do not receive much funding but we have coaches who can relate to the young people and who are able to get them to aspire to be great. We also have some very supportive parents who volunteer their time to ensure that things run smoothly.
